Gabby Sarmiento (b. 1990) is a visual artist working with lens-based media. She currently lives in Quezon City, Philippines.

She holds a European Master of Fine Art Photography degree from the Istituto Europeo di Design in Madrid, Spain, and a Bachelor of Arts in Photography degree from the School of Design and Arts of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in Manila, Philippines.

During her undergraduate studies, she was trained to become a commercial photographer. A year before graduating, she started experimenting more with photography, eventually veering away from the technically precise photographs she had been taking. Finding the need to be able to say more and do more through her photography, she moved to Spain in the spring of 2014 to attend graduate school.

Gabby’s passion for photography is matched by her passion for music. She is a singer-songwriter, and she is also one half of electronic music duo Jay Stubbing.

From time to time, Gabby experiments with videos and moving photographs, marrying her love for photography and music.

Artist Statement

For me, photography should be used as an avenue to connect with other people. It should be able to evoke both emotional and mental curiosity, and to encourage both external and internal dialogue. In my works, I try to push my personal boundaries to visualise my emotions, ideas, and ideals. I like exploring the relationships between sound and space to visualise the emotions I get from music and my surroundings. I believe that photography is always collaborative, regardless of whether it is direct or indirect, intentional or unintentional. And because of that, music plays a big part in what I do and how I work. When working on projects, I try to make straight photographs that can be read in more ways than one–still having more to offer if you are willing to take a closer look. My foremost goal is to use photography as a means of growing by discovering, and ultimately, understanding my own truths and the truths of those around me.
